What I look for in a dashboard

A dashboard should help someone notice, understand, and act. Everything else is decoration.

When I review a dashboard, I ask three questions: what changed, why does it matter, and what should happen next?

Good monitoring interfaces make those questions easy to answer without hiding the underlying evidence. They balance a quick overview with a clear path to detail.

The work is especially important in public programs, where a number is only useful when it can lead to a better conversation and a more accountable decision.
